This video shows how slow the creation of a new folder is in Firefox 3 (3.0.4, clean install). The same operation was practically instantaneous in all previous Firefox 2 versious up through the current 2.0.0.18. Many users have reported extremely slow Bookmark and History performance in Firefox 3 for at least six months, but this issue seems to have been ignored or denied. The fact is, the new Firefox 3 .sqlite bookmarking system is significantly slower than similar operations in the old, flat file bookmarking system of Firefox 2.
You can try the suggestions at the link below to change your security settings or use the sqlite3 "vacuum" command to shrink the .sqlite files in your Profile folder, but I didn't see much improvement.

If you are seeing Firefox move so slowly, why not use the SQLite vacuum extensions? There are about four of them and will help you speed up firefox.
