Lama Surya Das describes true Warriorship

Lama Surya Das is one of the foremost Western Buddhist meditation teachers and scholars, one of the main interpreters of Tibetan Buddhism in the West, and a leading spokesperson for the emerging American Buddhism. The Dalai Lama calls him "The Western Lama."

Surya Das has spent 40 years studying Zen, vipassana, yoga, and Tibetan Buddhism with the great masters of Asia, including the Dalai Lama's own teachers, and has twice completed the traditional three-year cloistered meditation retreat at his teacher's Tibetan monastery. He is an authorized lama (priest and spiritual master teacher) in the Nyingmapa School of Tibetan Buddhism and is founder of the Western Buddhist Teachers Network with the Dalai Lama, and founder and spiritual director of the Dzogchen Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and its branch centers.

Surya Das is author of many books, including his best-selling Awakening Trilogy: Awakening the Buddha Within, Awakening to the Sacred, and Awakening the Buddhist Heart. His most recent book is The Mind is Mightier Than the Sword: New Dharma Talks, and the forthcoming book, Buddha Standard Time: Awakening to the Infinite Possibilities of Now. A regular columnist for Beliefnet.com, he also writes regularly for Tricycle magazine, blogs for The Huffington Post, and is author of the Ask The Lama column (askthelama.com). Lama Surya Das is a sought-after teacher, speaker, and lecturer, conducting retreats and workshops worldwide.

  • really no reference to a spiritual warrior- is that a wedding ring how can you be a lama when your married-are you supposed to be a sunyassie first-fighting spiritual wickedness in high and low places as directed by god-is the true essence of a spiritual warrior--the lord said-many will come in my name-you could be one!

  • @BillKiernan Actually have no idea what your talking about...As Sura Das would say...Blessings and have a great Holiday season...I'm certain he would not mention Prozac,,,Just sayin.

  • @wallymann vacuous like calling this guy "the highest ranking american lama" or whatever? he's a joke in the non barnes and noble/opra lama circuit, an outsider. so who is in charge of bestowing upon him the "highest rank." not that any of that matters anyway, the whole thing is a tibetan family business, that some westerners get to get in on if they're lucky, instead of being one of the sheep. the sheep are for donations and for girls to fuck, if they're someones wife or not, whatever.

  • @BillKiernan Thanks for clarifying that for me...Succinct and to the point...Unfortunately also inane and vacuous with absolutely no information...Try harder next time and attempt to get at least a modicum of information before posting something like this...Please don't waste your time or mine...Thanks again man !

  • @wallymann "and is the highest ranking American...Buddhist Lama in the country." oohhhh that sounds very fancy. unfortunately it's complete bullshit.

  • @wbish001 Thanks young guy. But remember; it's not about me. It's about the "gurus". Take care.

  • @perlaand You're special :)

  • Lama Surya Das is not a Guru...He is a Spiritual teacher trained in Dzogchen Tibetan Buddhism which took about 15-20years of study and is the highest ranking American...Buddhist Lama in the country...I would not refer to that as self proclaimed...Knowledge is power...Seek wisdom instead of wiseassness...It will serve you better.

  • Self-proclaimed guru? A strange designation for a teacher who was explicitly authenticated by one of the most revered Tibetan masters of the last generation. And probably more than one. One pernicious feature of the Internet is that it allows the (apparently) completely misinformed to post to a huge audience.

  • The problem is that most of these self-proclaimed gurus are lost in the desert trying to find a way out as everybody else. Some may be there to scam people and others seem to be totally delusional.
