Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens

The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens is a well-built, well-spec'd lens with a decent price. It does not outperform (physically or optically) Canon's similarly spec'd EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens, but it costs less than half as much. ( $500-$550 USD)
The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens is solidly built but pays some penalty in the form of size and weight. Measuring 3.5" x 4.5" (88.7 x 115.5mm) and weighing 25.2 oz (715g), the Sigma is still smaller and lighter than Canon's 24-70 L which measures 3.3" x 4.9" (83.2 x 123.5 mm) and weighs 32 oz (950g). Extended, the length difference between the two lenses increases slightly. The Sigma is at its shortest around 60mm and longest at 24mm focused closely as it extends a small amount with focusing. The Sigma's diameter abruptly changes at various points, creating hard-edge transitions that in my opinion detract from the comfort of holding this lens compared to the consistent diameter of Canon's 24-70. However, it is not hard to find the correct ring to turn.

An 82mm filter diameter makes the Sigma 24-70 very wide at the objective end, makes filters very expensive (and able to be shared with few other lenses) and though not unusual, blocks the on-board flash on the wider end of the focal length range.

  • I am willing to give this lens a shot. I own the canon ef 70 200 L II, and I can tell you that my canon ef 70-300 with no IS take the a picture with the same level of sharpness and color. Later guys

  • @gadernal617 what camera body do u have

  • so this is a L lens? im new to photography. compared to the canon 24-105L how does it perform? i know you said it doesn't outperform the canon, but photo wise, would u think you made a good purchase? i'm in the market for something affordable with quality. thanks

  • @lsvtec hard to say on what you want to use it for what type of work, the 24-70mm is a f/2.8 and the canon 24-105mm L lens is a f/4 so the glass is a little darker and the price is higher, And ya when I got the Canon 24-105mm L lens the photos where ya nicer and more sharp If you have $1,500 USD get the canon L lens but If u look around you can get the sigma 24-70mm Lens for $450 the sigma worked good for me. If just matters if you need more zoom Point is BOTH ARE GOOD

  • i see you own the sigma 24-70. I currently own a few L lenses and decided to buy this sucker instead of the canon 24-70. Have you found any problems with the lens? also would u happen to have a portfolio based on that lens itself?

    thanks

  • @mikemitchphotography I have no problems with this lens I have a slideshow video called photoshoot 11-06-09 and 11-07-09 the newer videos are shoot on a Canon 5DMK II and the 24-105mm L lens but ya the 24-70 sigma I used that lens for about 2 years it was my every day lens now i just shoot with the Canon L lens the 24-105

  • @underscore84 ahhh see i understand now, but i shoot a lot of snowboard and skateboarding and often i break hoods and filters so that is my reasoning plus i dont use filters i use 100% clear glass

  • @underscore84 so you would rather scratch a 8 or $900 lens instead of a $40 filter? and you cant use lens caps ALL THE TIME, you cant take a picture with the lens cap on LOL :)

  • @underscore84 Ya I dont use filters anymore I dont have that lens anymore also I upgraded my lenses to L Lenses

  • @Mailllo i mean of course you are right about each photographers different, but i used to own canon 24-70 L 2.8 usm and wanted to try same zoom and f stop and sold the canon and bought sigma 24-70 ex dg hsm and if i compare the images, sigma is way more noticeable and better overall,,also the build quality is better ,,, if you want to see the images i have im welcome to show it to you
