Many people have asked me how long it takes to create my ceramic pieces. Generally, it takes between 4-6 hours on average, depending on the size of the piece, the content, and the detail involved.

I set up a video camera and filmed the process on a piece entitled Interior 1 (The flood). This drawing took approximately 4 1/2 hours to create, starting with the preliminary drawing with pencil (which burns away in the firing process), the actual drawing with black underglaze, and finally a light color wash. Once this is done, the bisque must be hand-dipped in a transparent glaze, and fired at cone 06 (around 1850º) for approximately 7 hours.

Once the piece has cooled and unloaded from the kiln, the drawing is permanent and sealed inside the clear glaze. The platters I draw on are safe to eat from, but are not dishwasher or microwave safe.
