    Back in the day, mention of competitors led to bad lawsuits. That's why commercials always referred to "the leading brand" rather than by name. Sometime in the 80s that all changed. Some lawsuit must have been decided in a way that made it more safe to do direct comparisons.

    Actually, back in the '80s, businesses were able to be sued for using any other specific business as comparison in their advertising. That's not the case anymore.
