In the last question of the hour-long meeting, VCU Social Justice junior Vicente Gonzalez asked LaHood a question which referenced an earlier comment by the Secretary regarding future government standards for automobile oil efficiency.
"I was wondering," said Gonzalez, "you said that by 2025 the deal is to have 50 mile-per-gallon [automobiles]?"
"Fifty-four, yeah," said LaHood.
"Well, if we're expected to exhaust all the world's oil reserves within the next 25, 30-ish years, then why is gasoline being discussed in these negotiations at all?" asked Gonzalez.
LaHood responded, "There's an unlimited supply of oil in many countries around the world."
Amidst murmuring and laughter from the audience, Gonzalez said, "Seriously? So you're saying the supply of gasoline will never end? That it's unlimited?"
"Absolutely. Absolutely." said LaHood. "Now, some of these countries aren't our friends, others are." After saying oil would not run out in the student's or his lifetime, LaHood said, "We're not going to run out of gas. We're not going to run out of oil for a long, long, long time."
Lastly, LaHood said, "Many countries have an unlimited supply."

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood is as correct as anybody else. The GAO reported in 2007, "there is no coordinated federal strategy for reducing uncertainty about the peak’s timing or mitigating its consequences". The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) report titled "Uncertainty about Future Oil Supply Makes It Important to Develop a Strategy for Addressing a Peak and Decline in Oil Production" shows OPEC production increasing through 2030.
