The English language comes from more roots than any other, possibly due to the large amount of times in history other countries with other languages have invaded us or been invaded by us. The vast majority of English comes from Latin, a lot from Ancient Greek, and from Germanic, and as you say, French influences. Americans speak English, but with various alternate words and spellings. Everybody happy now?
