Rubiton was a great galloper. As was the Queenslander Vo Rogue. I still can't believe how Vo Rogue held on for 4th in that Epic Cox Plate after setting an unbelievable pace early. Weight for age races these days need more Vo Rogues. This takes me back to when I was spellbound by the horses and would bet-up with confidence.
@Catforre I think that if it wasn't for Beau Zam's win over Bone Crusher in Canb he probably would have won horse of the year. It's always hard to overlook the Cox winner for horse of the year. Especially when the field contains Beau Zam, Campaign King, Vo Rogue, Our Poetic Prince, Fair Sir. I think even by his usual standards Small killed Vo Rogue's chances in the Cox Plate that year. Rubiton's win in the Makinnon was his best win IMO. Mainly because he had clearly peaked in the CP.
Thank you for uploading this videa. I loved this horse and have followed his offspring incessantly. What a great shame he never made it to the track in Autumn '88. In my opinion, Rubiton should have taken come the Horse of the Year award for 87/88 over Beau Zam.
He was a great horse. I was so looking forward to the Autumn of "88 to see more return clashes with Vo Rogue.Pity he broke down. I still rate him one of the best, even though we never saw the best of him.

i've always resented the fact that I had to attend the APS athletics on Cox Plate Day 87.Much rather would have watched this race live.

@aasp1967 Yes, David Tootell rode Rubiton on all occasions until Harry White took over.
