In 1991 it looked like the country's first food irradiation plant was coming to Mulberry, Florida. So, in January 1992 in Tampa, with several other activists, I started Citizens For Safe Food, the world's first anti-irradiation organization.
xxxxThe plant opened anyway. The food is exposed to dangerous levels of radiation that kill good & bad microorganisms, destroy nutrients and damage DNA in the food. What's wrong with food irradiation?! Use your head!

First performed live in Tampa in February 1992 when I opened for then-Presidential candidate Jerry Brown during the 1992 Florida Democratic Presidential Primary campaign, in an event sponsored by Citizens For Safe Food. I don't know if the organization still exists. Brown eventually lost the Primary Election to former Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Brown lost the Democratic Presidential Nomination to Clinton later that year.
xxxxBefore running for national office, Jerry Brown had been Governor of California from the late 1970s to early 1980s, when he enacted the best environmental laws in history. After running for President, Jerry Brown was Mayor of Oakland for many years. He is now Attorney General of California.

I always liked J.Brown. I had no idea that he had become attorney general of California (or that he was no longer mayor of Oakland - I'm a bit behind the times! The latter job is better, he can do more).

Brown also had the best plan for a "flatter tax" that I've ever heard. It was basically this (some minor details may be in error): 17% for all (corporations & individuals) who make over 50K, no exceptions/exemptions; 13% for 12K to 50k,no exceptions/exemptions, 0 taxes for under 12k.Perfect!

Yes,JBrown's flatter tax would fund all the country's expenses comfortably. That's Progressive compared to our current regressive system:everyone pays 35% except corporations (25%) & multi-millionaires Hedge Fund investors (15%). And then there's Social Security, which is going broke over regressiveness: Less than $100,000/yr pays 14%; $1 Million/yr pays 1.4%; 10Mil pays 0.14%; 100Mil pays 0.014%; 1 Billion/yr pays 0.0014%. In short, a person making $10,000 pays 10,000 times the rate.

Yes, even someone making $5,000/yr pays 10,000 times the rate of someone making 1 Billion! That's how dishonest politicians make SocSec go broke, by not collecting ANY of the money due from the rich. Obama has a cowardly idea to deal with the disparity. He just announced he wants to close that TEN THOUSAND-TO-ONE Billionaire loophole. But he wants to close it IN THE YEAR 2019!
