Ms. Raimondo reads A Clear Midnight by Walt Whitman. (Welcome back to WHRHS, Lynn!)

This is thy hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless,
Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson done,
Thee fully forth emerging, silent, gazing, pondering the themes thou lovest best,
Night, sleep, death and the stars.

  • Whitman's connections to nature and his ability to get that into words in fantastic!

  • Just as Whitman expresses in his "A Clear Midnight", I too find myself pondering the events occurring in my life as I am attempt to escape into the "wordless" realm of sleep. The serenity of midnight (which Whitman manages to capture in this poem) does offer a useful reprieve from all daily activities and allow a large amount of time for reflection. As such, I use this time of serrenity to reflect upon both daily, future, and potential events that could impact my life.

  • At night, i sometimes think about the events of the day, but I mostly think about the future, my plans for tomorrow, and of things that I wish I could do.

  • Jennifer King: At night as I lay in bed, I find myself pondering about my grandfather and if he is in heaven. I wonder whether or not he is watching over me and who he is with. I also think about my future in the sport of trampoline and the goals I want to achieve.

  • At night, I usually ponder about what what had happened that day or something I'm excited or nervous about that will happen the next day.

  • I think the simplicity of this poem allows the reader to focus on what is being said, rather then getting lost in detail. Late at night, I often reelect on my day and worry about the future.

  • After dinner, I usually walk around my town alone or with my family. Often, we talk about schools, teachers, friends, grades, and current events. When I walk alone, I often listen to music, watch the moon, and think about my future: what am I going to do tomorrow. I loved the poem:)

  • I really enjoyed this poem, because it is easy to relate too. At the end of the day everyone begins to ponder life and the events of their day.

  • Although the poem is short, It shows how talanted an artist Whitman really was. "Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson done." The line written is so basic yet multifactorial. That simplicity outshines complexity. Maybe that order and chaos work hand in hand.

    -Maggie Kollmar

  • This poem kinda makes me think about how my life is. It also makes me think of how different I would be in a different setting and with different people around me.
