The final movement of the Musical Offering, a 6 part fugue, also known as a 'ricercar'. It is based on a theme, written by Fredrick the Great, which is almost a chromatic 'tone-row'.
Karl Munchinger conducts the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester.

The image is Albrecht Durer's 'Melencolia'.

  • The chromaticism could go both ways - to difficult to harmonise sensibly or so many options it's a doddle.

  • I longed for a full strings orchestra version! A fine performance!

  • Oh Joy, Oh Bliss,Oh Heavens, such beautiful pictures passing through my mind while listening to this

  • @ChalieChaplin Indeed. I'd go still farther. I'd say 'A Musical Offering' is one of very greatest creative achievements ever produced by any human at any time in any medium.

  • That's nice.

  • @alienalienss - I suppose it's Munchinger's ~ but it's been played in similar orchestral fashion by so many conductors, that Munchinger may have been following some earlier transcription. Of course, Webern's famous transcription has quite a different feel than all the others I'm referring to. I will look into this some more.
