Actually its a Dobsonfly, they start life as a non-winged helgerMITE, mite as in Larval. But yes Bas love the f-ers and you can fish with one all day. Durable as hell. Just gotta cut the legs off or they'll crawl under a rock.

my dad caught one of these when I was little and kept in an aquarium. it scared the hell out of me

That insect is called a Helgermite. It starts its life as a non-winged insect, then molts into a winged insect. Very creepy indeed but a GREAT fish bait, esp Large and Smallmouth Bass.
