Two St. John Providence Health System hospitals, Providence Hospital and St. John Hospital Macomb-Oakland, are ranked as top 50 hospitals in the United States for heart care, according to an independent national study conducted by Thomson Reuters, a healthcare information company.
This is the 10th consecutive year that Providence has been named to the list, making it the only hospital in southeast Michigan to receive this recognition ten years in a row. St. John Macomb-Oakland is ranked for the second consecutive year. Both hospitals were recognized in the category of Teaching Hospitals with Cardiovascular Residency Programs.
In its 12th year, the study singled out 50 hospitals rather than the traditional practice of naming 100 winners. The study examined the performance of 1,022 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions such as angioplasties.
The study shows that 96 percent of cardiovascular inpatients survive and approximately 93 percent remain complication-free, indicative of improved cardiovascular care across-the-board over the past decade.
