An IranAir Boeing 727 crashed in Iran on Sunday, killing an estimated 77 people, reports AP. The plane, which was carrying 105 people, went down in a snowstorm after alerting ground control to a technical problem. The plane had already tried to land once when its second emergency landing attempt failed, and the aircraft broke into pieces after crashing into farmland. Officials say anywhere from 27-33 passengers were injured, while others walked away from the crash. Airplane accidents are nothing new to Iran; the country's aging fleet of aircraft (including IranAir's pre-1979 Boeings) suffer from poor maintenance. U.S. sanctions also make it difficult for Iranian airlines to access spare parts for their decades-old American planes.
