Tribute to Alan Chan

A tribute to my friend Alan who passed away at the age of 24.

On August 28th 2009 Alan was hospitalized for a stroke. He was lucky to be alive as the doctors were able to drain the blood in his brain and save his life. Doctors were unsure about why he had a stroke.

He developed Hydrocephalus in September, which required a Ventricular Shunt to drain fluid in his brain. Untreated, it would have caused immense intracranial damage to his brain. After various scans, in October doctors discovered a tumor growing in the center back of his brain including areas of the brain stem. The stroke happened because Alan was growing a tumor. He had surgery to remove the tumor. Only 90% was taken out, any more and it would have left him with severe deficits because the leftover tumor remained on the brainstem.

Lab tests confirmed the tumor was cancerous. Alan has Brain Cancer, a type called Glioblastoma Multiforme. It is a very aggressive tumor and a terminal illness. There is NO cure. More information about this disease can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glioblastoma_multiforme
