THE BALLAD OF THE HEARTLESS BASTARDS

Not long ago I think I lost my heart
To a barmaid who sang of broken dreams
Inside a tavern where she plied her trade
Far more maid than maiden it would seem
I was young, let this be my excuse
The demon spirit flowing through my mind
In another time, another place
Perhaps I would have left that world behind

Arent the leaves that fall a golden brown?
Isnt it a lovely night, my dear?
I see only strangers gathered round
Everybody else has disappeared

We made a pact and bore each other well
Through southern towns we played as gypsies do
Living hand to mouth and cheek to jowl
Soon a third had joined the rambling two
With twang and curse, in swarthy company
Her voice unbridled echoed in the halls
Many claimed that mannish were her ways
But no one could evade my sirens call

In the trees the birds fly to and fro
While I sit and write another verse
Im not the kind to say I told you so
But look around, things couldnt get much worse

The endless road, the useless one night stands
The promises of riches and of fame
Added up to nothing more or less
Than leading us back to from where we came
Until one night beside the tavern walls
Things were said that I can not forget
In the end my songbird fly away
Leaving me behind without regret

An autumn moon lights up the evening sky
A gentle breeze is blowing through my hair
Save your breathe and look me in the eye
Cant you understand that no ones there?

A penny for thoughts a round for mine
Stay here one more moment if you would
Correct my failing eyes but can it be
A fairer no now stands where I once stood?
My songbird sings much as she sang before
Her enchanting, heartless lullabies
While my double echos every word
As to his knowing glance my love replies

How I wish the night would never end
Sitting here beneath the canopy
I pray I never come to you again
As, I know, You wont come back to me
