the VERY first time I ever heard the expression "math rock" was from a member of Throwing Muses. I think she should be receiving royalties for that term, at this point.

At the time I thought it more shocking than all the hardcore I was listening to, which despite its speed and volume still seemed to inhabit pretty well-circumscribed territory. Throwing Muses, on the other hand, were constantly charging off in different directions, finding a strange tunefulness in unexpected places. They were (are?) real inventors.

Definitely the worst version of the song I've ever heard. It's still great though.

I was turned on to Throwing Muses when Lonely as an Eyesore (4AD label) compilation album came out. Been a fan ever since, still today, hope to be for 20 more years, at the least.
