Owning your own home: an idea so popular it's known as the American dream. But as prices fall and foreclosures rise, for many it's become a nightmare. How do you know whether renting or owning is the way to go? Bankrate.com dives deeper into this question.

Never again shall I rent. I felt that my rent check was only going to the landlord's superiority, and my inferiority.

So now I own my own home. The mortgage payments are cheaper than my rent would be, and considering my house only cost a mere $20,000 in tip top shape, I'll have it paid off in no time.

  • Realtors are such scum.

  • If you rent just put the dollar difference from buying in a mutual fund each month.

  • Better yet buy a few: One to live in, the rest to rent out.

  • They'll balance each other. If it becomes too advantagous to rent relative to buy, house prices will fall and rent will rise, and vice versa. In the long run it'll all even out.

  • Buying a home now is an investment in you. Check out the Shirley Husar show for more information.

  • uh, ya, she would be an amateur if she's not a professional painter... what a keen observation. unfortunately it bears no consequence to the subject at hand. so by your deductive reasoning and some obscure metaphor to owning a benz you are an "idiot" if you do simple housework? and not only that, but you don't "know how to manage your time"? i'll be the guy laughing my ass off when you get gouged for shitty craftsmanship on your own house. that is assuming that you actually own a house.

  • ha ha! @ 1:19 taping off to paint. what an amateur!

it's silly. like a mercedes benz owner changing a spare tire on the shoulder of a highway--idiotic. if a Mercedes Benz (nice home in this case) is within your financial means then so too should be the cost of servicing it.

for those who say DIY is rewarding: taking a vacation because you know how to manage your time is more rewarding...hire a painter.

  • Owning a home is the way to go now..low prices and interest rates never been a better time
