This video was taken during an MRI scan. A scanner was installed in an old trailer without securing the grad cables!! They are hanging vertically at the back of the magnet, flapping in the magnetic breeze. This caused HUGE artifacts, both from spiking and from temporal variations in the main field and gradient fields giving the appearance of very bad eddy current compensation. Of course, eddies measured fine under the low power conditions of the eddy current compensation protcols.

  • No one was messing with the cables. They certainly did flap. I was called to work on this scanner (NT with Intera upgrade, Syngo installed). Scans with low intensity gradients weren't too bad. Moderate to high intensity gradients produced progressively worse images. Securing the grad gables fixed the problem. Period.

What was going bad at the images?

Artefacts caused by spikes or ghost caused by B0 instability?

  • @Fentesie

More artifacts by spikes, than ghosting. The spikes were definitely present in high duty cycle scans. In scans of low to medium intensity, there were ghosts from, as you say, B0 instability. These appeared in scans strong enough to move the cables significantly, butu not strong enough to make the cables strike the magnet or the trailer walls.
