Architect: Lord, Aeck & Sargent - Collaboration with the National Park Service developed a destination center for the Blue Ridge Parkway and its 11 million annual visitors. Nestled into a hill along a roadway leading to the existing National Park Service headquarters, the Center is adjacent to the Parkway. Evoking a tree-house-like atmosphere the Center allows visitors to experience the parkways characteristic vistas and surrounding woodlands, and displays the distinct architectural character of the region, through a modern vernacular design vocabulary. The scale and green roof help it disappear into the landscape, leaving vistas undisturbed, while innovative façade materials evidence commitment to technology and sustainable design.
