Performed November 14, 2008 at the Alberta Street Pub, Portland OR. Video by Randy Prince.
Sayed Darwish song about a group of common laborers going to work in the morning lamenting their plight. It would have been an accurate depiction of laborers in early 20th century Egypt. Darwish (1895-1923) also composed Eygpt's national anthem.

"This Pretty One"

This pretty one awoke to bake in the early morning,
As the rooster crows Kou-Kou-Kou-Kou at dawn,
Come on laborers; lets see what God has in store for us today,
May God bless your morning Master Atiya.

Morning has broken, only God knows what the day will bring.
We are penniless, but our hearts and minds are at peace.
The door to hope is through you, Merciful One.
Patience is good, it changes circumstances;
Those of you who have money, the poor have their generous God.

Put your hand in mine Abu Salah;
As long as you rely on God, you will live in comfort.
Rely on Him, come on, come on, time is passing by
Patience is good, it changes circumstances;
Those of you who have money, the poor ones have their generous God.

And this pretty one awoke to bake in the early morning,
As the rooster crows Kou-Kou-Kou-Kou at dawn,
Come on laborers; lets see what God has in store for us today,
May God bless your morning Master Atiya.

    If only more of us in Europe heard such wonderful music our understanding of what the Middle east has to offer us would be greatly enriched.
