Bruegel werd in 1546 in het Antwerpse schildersgilde opgenomen, en werd leerling van Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
Tot 1559 maakt hij vooral gravures en prenten (ontwerpen voor wandtapijten) daarna komt er plots een totale ommekeer, Bruegel gaat nog enkel schilderen.
Het ene meesterwerk volgt snel een ander op.
Over Bruegel doen allerlei verhalen de ronde.
Zo zou hij volgens Carel van Mander vaak incognito het platteland hebben bezocht om het boerenleven gade te slaan.
Andere bronnen menen dat hij wel eens ketterse sympathieën zou gehad hebben, wat hij op verdoken wijze in zijn schilderijen zou verwerkt hebben.
Feit is dat het oeuvre van Bruegel, weliswaar verder bouwend op tradities a la Jeroen Bosch, uniek is.
Pieter Bruegel the elder was a Netherlandish renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes ans peasant scenes.
He is nicknamed peasant-Bruegel to distinguish him from other members of the Bruegek dynasty, but is also the one generally meant when the context does not make clear which Bruegel is being referred to.
Using abundant spirit and comic power, he created some of the early images of acute social protest in art history.
On his deathbed he reportedly ordered his wife to burn the most subversive of his drawings to protect his family from political persecution.
