It has been 20 years since tanks rumbled into Tiananmen Square to end a student-led pro-democracy movement that had begun in the middle of April, 1989. The violent crackdown was covered by the western media and shocked the world.

Hundreds of thousands of Beijingers participated in the protests, and unconfirmed reports said that about 3,000 people, most civilians, were killed as PLA troops received orders to clear protestors from the square. Authorities insisted that only about 300 people died, 23 of them students, and ignored calls to publish a list of victims.

In this slideshow, hear an eyewitness account about the days leading up to June 4 and the immediate aftermath from a tourist who was visiting Beijing at the time.

  • @Chinastar85 I've got a great library system here (takes a huge chunk of my tax dollars though), I will look up Wang Lixiong's book the next time I go. Thanks for the tip.

  • @Chinastar85 And they did it again with the Tibet protests in 2008. The media published photos of Nepal police beating the crap out of protestors in the street and called them Chinese military! That's shameless deception and bank handedness and have forever changed my opinion of western media.

Why doesn't the west complain about human rights in Nepal? Those cops seemed brutal...
