In 2002 I found Melodic Death Metal. Though I don't remember anyone calling it that at the time. Just called it Gothenburg Metal....anyway thats not the point.
My point is I was always torn between three genres. Punk, Melodic Death Metal, and Bluegrass.
I wasn't happy playing either one entirely on their own. So I decided to mix them all together. Bands like korpiklaani and many others have taken their countries folk music and applied to metal. Why couldn't I do something similar with Bluegrass???
There have been a few Bluegrass Metal bands like Los Duggans and Uncle Fucker, but neither of them have done exactly what I'm trying to do. Though Los Duggans are still really frikin cool.
Several times I tried getting together with Banjo players, but none of them could figure out what I was trying to do. The banjo being an open chord instrument and the E chord relatively rare in Bluegrass it was a bit of a challenge to figure it out.
So since no one could figure it out, I decided to learn the instrument myself. I picked it up in July of 2010. Anyone thats picked up a banjo knows how difficult of an instrument it really is. Guitar is childs play compared to this damn thing, fun as it is...it just doesn't get along very well with metal.
Can it be done...of course....is it easy....HELL NO!!!
So here is my attempt as Bluegrass Metal....Out-Law Grass....Epic Bluegrass.....Black Grass.....Cow Punk....whatever its called.

  • Are you seriously playing a 5-string with a guitar pick?!?! shun.

  • @guitardudebanjoman in the pic yes, but the recording no.

  • Where are the cymbals?

  • @ShroomBead its only a closed highhat. I use fruity loops because I don't have a real drum set anymore. The cymbal sounds on FL are really annoying.

  • The guitar is too quiet, and the kickdrum is too loud.

  • @LiNaK37 idk about that one. If the guitar was any louder you wouldn't hear the banjo. Kick drum is always really loud in metal, plus the 1 - 2 beat helps the bluegrass aspect shine threw. If the bass was the only thing doing it, it would just be straight up rock rather than bluegrass.

  • GOOD TRY OF music mixtures, interesting, keep going

  • @AndrewDeer1

ya straight up man and they sound kick ass too (not that this is bad or anything)

  • Btw. some folk metal bands use, though rarely, banjo. Such as Cruachan, Finntroll or Ensiferum.

  • omg, thumbs up. Very good, i like it

  • raw talent right there, that shit was fucking badass, real nice like folk rock almost

  • God damit kinda like it. It's almost like Christian death metal two opposite ends of the spectrum. Oh yea I hate C D M.

  • Everyone who is hating on this video has n clue what they are talking about or listening to. As a new banjo player, I understand how hard it would be to play this, but to WRITE IT TO A METAL BEAT is nothing short of genius. Some people don't even realize banjo metal exists...

  • Fuckin epic bro!!! I lov how u made two instruments that never meant to be together sound sooo good.... Keep rockin bro!!!
