Nine months after Patty Silva-Hicks tore out her front lawn to plant fruit trees and produce, she shows us how her garden grows. She's eating her yard (cherries, plums, avocado and chard), but it's also surprisingly attractive with touches like lettuce and pepper hedgerows. • I was hoping my next writeup about Patty would be to offer a new video with her, but I have sad news. She died suddenly a few weeks ago (related to a heart condition). It is obviously a huge loss for her family and those who knew her (a large part of her town of Cloverdale). I add my condolences.

Patty left behind a real gift with her garden. Those in permaculture talk about this type of gardening as permanent agriculture. Patty has left a legacy here with trees that could outlive most of us.

  • Im so sorry to hear that.

  • I am terribly saddened by her death. I am watching her videos and would love to do exactly that for our yard. I am already planning it. My sympathies go out to her family. I would have loved to have met her.

  • how do you keep animals from harvesting from you? this is an awesome video!!! you've inspired me to make my own mini garden here in the city. i don't have a yard, but i do have a balcony :) Can't wait for the summer now.

  • Are there any new videos? something recent and up to date? This is great! I want to see more!

  • I love it!!

  • This is great. I keep telling my husband the same thing. I want to rip out our grass too.

  • Loooooooooooooooooooove it! I will do something like this with my next house. For sure. Oh! save your seeds people... save your seeds! They will be worth GOLD in 20 years.

  • gotta put mulch down after you plant to control water dissipating on you, and to control the weeds setting up amongst the food plants and trees. Good luck!

  • i love your plan! can you email me an image of your garden. the paln and layout. please! I love this!
