Border Tensions Cost Jobs

Fighting on Thailand's border with Cambodia is threatening locals. Just two days ago, clashes killed two Cambodian soldiers and injured others, and residents are worried about their safety.

STORY:
Yesterday Thai and Cambodian army commanders agreed to conduct joint patrols of the disputed patch of borderland after Wednesday's clash. But many people in the area were frightened as they worry fighting will erupt again.

Wednesday's battle killed two Cambodians and injured two more. Seven Thai soldiers were also wounded in the most serious border clash in years.

At a village about 10 kilometers away from the border, a bunker was built to protect the people in the village.

"I'm afraid that the situation will get worse. I don't trust Cambodian soldiers because they are undisciplined and uneducated."

But it's not just safety issues effecting this community, but economic worries, too. Thais have been barred from getting close to the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple since border tension in July, when around 1,000 soldiers on both sides faced off only yards apart from each other.

Many villagers are now jobless as their businesses of selling souvenirs to tourists visiting the temple was forced to shut down after the border tension.
