Hey guys I'm posting this because I just saw that the Guiness worlds record for the longest continuous drum roll was just broken.

I corrected the record holder in a blog and well I get the impression that some folks just don't believe what you are about to see really happened. Well,....... Here's the story. About 18 years ago I entered a local radio contest for a drum roll off. The rules simple. Play a CLOSED roll and don't stop. If you stop playing a roll for any reason, you're out. NO BREAKS of ANY kind. That's right not even bathroom breaks! I told all my friends I was going to win this contest as a tribute to my teacher Alex Duthart and to show other drummers what a Scottish Pipe band drummer can do! In the beginning there was about 40 to 50 drummers, in the end it was just us three. The other two guys Brian "P-Nut" Kennedy and Chris Glen became my brothers by the days end. We started around 10:00 am in the morning and within a few hours later the other drummers began dropping like flies. By sunset there were still a few. By nightfall ther was just a handful. Sometime after midnight it was just us three. We played through the early morning hours with a belief that one of us might quit. After a certain point we could see it in each others eyes none of us were going to quit. So we agreed to all stop at the same time. We got a little accented roll cadence going and stopped together perfectly. Twenty six & a half hours later we realized how badly we had injured our hands. (evidenced by what happened to us in the video when we stopped playing. It wasn't pretty.) Not posted in clip. I post this here today in light of the new record, which is no where near close to ours. I've been asked many times over the years "Then why aren't you guys in the Guiness book of worlds records?" Chris' father contacted Guinness but they would not accept the record because the category didn't exist at the time. The only drumming category for was for a nonstop playing held for some 52 days by a guy on a kit. However, of course he was allowed breaks every hour. We never felt the need to try to get the record re-examined. I post this quickly edited clip of some of the video to provide proof that we did accomplish this feat. I have received emails that this length was not possible,...by any means. Myself, Brian & Chris know different. The contest was recorded by members of the media of all 3 local TV stations and radio stations and was witnessed by hundreds of people, all throughout the contest from morning to afternoon to midnight and then sunup the next day. The owner of Fox Music, Charles Fox went home & got a sleeping bag to sleep in the store. It is what it is. Perhaps we need to look into getting Guinness to re-examine the record. That would be another page in the story. I strongly recommend NOT doing this unless you seriously want to injure your hands. I suffered a stress fracture of my left thumb that still haunts me to this day. I think Alex was smiling down on me that day!
