1 in 10 will visit the hospital each year

Characteristics of uninsured hospital stays compared to all hospital stays, 2006
Uninsured stays All hospital stays
Number of hospital stays 2,243,900 39,450,200
(percent of all stays) 5.7% 100.0%
Mean length of stay, days 3.9 4.6

Hospital charges and costs
Mean charge per stay, $19,400 $24,000
Reasonable cost for hospitalization $7865

5.7% of all hospital stays are by the uninsured
$24,000 is the average cost of insured hospitalization
$24,000 + $1,104 = $25,104 or 4.4%

27% of all hospitalizations are due to heart complications.
94.9% hospitalized for heart complications are age 65 and older
11% of all hospitalizations are due to child birth

Of the 1 in 10 who will visit the hospital each year 36% of those hospitalizations are due to child birth and heart issues from those older then age 65. This means, 1 in 16 will visit the hospital outside the normal processes associated with life and death.

$1568.75 per person, per year in a pool of 16 members.

knowing that outside of hospitalizations for natural processes such as child birth and aging our chance of hospitalization is less than 6.25%

6.25% chance of hospitalization outside of normal human events

This means, in a pool of 16 members each member would need to contribute $1568.75 per year or $174 dollars per month. To cover the $25,104 per hospitalization which also covers those currently hospitalized and unable pay.

Now for those 65 years and older.
You can live as long as your strength allows and you can pay for it.
The real news is we can pay for it.

TOTAL WITH INDIVIDUALS 65+
HOSPITALIZATION in a private pool of 16 members
$1568.75 or 174 per month working individuals 18 to 64 years old (General) plus
$1031 or $86 per month covering individuals 65+ years old (+65 heart)
TOTAL $2599.75 or $216.65 per month to insure a pool of 16 members between ages 18 to 64 at todays costs for hospitalization. including care for those ages 65+. This is $2100 less per year than the current average of 4700 for single payers. And 175 less per month then the current average of 391.

Those ages 0-17

Those who are unable to contribute, those Ages 0-17 make up 17.1% of those hospitilized. Of that 17.1%, 11% of those are childbirths.

As we discussed in the childbirth segments individuals can keep their wealth ouside of corporate based coverage solutions. There is really no need to insure natural events such as childbirth. So those individuals or families who are responsible for that less than 7% in the age range of 0-17 who require hospitalization each year outside of the birth processes they would need to contribute an additional $448 per year or $38 per month.
Individuals having dependent care, those ages 0-17 outside childbith
$2599.75 + 448 (1) = 3047 per year which is 1652 less then the current avg of 4700 spent for a single individual with no dependent. This comes to 254 per month 138 less per month then the current 392 being spent by a single payer with no dependent

Families with ages 0-17 outside childbirth
5199 + 896(2) = 6095 per year with is 3905 less then the current avg of 10,000 spent for a family coverage. This comes to 508 per month 325 less per month then the current 833 being spent by families with an average of dependents.

End Result over time. Reasonable, sustainable health coverage while retaining the power of the individual to do good.

  • @powerofone321 lol...I would not go so far as to say it's all in the perspective as there are "concrete" realities we must face though I do thank for sharing yours. It's helpful I suppose to inject a bit of lightheartedness. No secret I'm a bit analytical and some would choose other words to describe me but I can appreciate a bit of humor, so thanks!

  • You say "hospitalization for a nervous breakdown." I hear "quiet vacation with awesome meds."
