CHICAGO (WGN) ―
You've probably heard the story by now. Bullies were so hard on her, 15 year-old Phoebe Prince took her own life.

Bullying is a problem in schools across the country. One Chicago self-defense instructor is helping kids fight back.

Bosen Chicago opened about six months ago. They offer all kinds of martial arts courses, as well as fitness classes. Frank Roman is their sensei - the man behind their "Bully Protection Program" that teaches kids techniques on how to respond when confronted.

The class goes well beyond a kick to the shin. Frank teaches the children take downs, punches, kicks, pressure points, throat chops and more. When I first heard about the course, I had to admit I cringed. Teaching kids to combat violence with violence just seemed a bit wrong.

But Frank insists the best way to confront a bully is with confidence. He teaches kids not to look down at the floor, to look their bully in the eye. When you show fear, all is lost.

He teaches his students the physical techniques as a last possible resort. Sometimes a "STOP! STOP!" just won't do and a violent encounter is imminent. Frank wants his students to take down their attacker, leave them in pain, and immediately call the police.

The course goes through different scenarios. The kids are trained for situations that occur on buses, in classrooms, in playgrounds and more.

But I still had the question - how can Frank be sure that these kids won't go out and use these techniques to harm others without being confronted?

His answer? Because if Frank finds out - they'll answer to him. He also gets to know the children and their families, listens to their stories, and even looks at their report cards. The class promotes education to make sure the kids stay out of trouble.

You can check out Bosen's class schedule on their website. Frank offers a free week for each course, so you can see if you like it before you sign up.

  • I remember this little kid in grade 7, these two mean little pricks kept torturing this special needs kid. Action had been taken before to stop the two but they always did it in front of the students for 2 years straight. I could see no one would help him because of fear, but I had size on them. Finally in the hall with everyone there I walked up and knocked both of them down on their ass; I got a 2 week suspension for it but it was worth it because they never touched him again.
