First of all to the MMA guys, I respect you but you are training for the ring. Aikido trains for peaceful endings to violent conflicts. Aiki33, you don't need to defend yourself to these guys. Your techniques are smooth and impressive. I don't however recomend you EVER doing a demo with a live blade. At least get a butter knife! Great video!

The truth is, if other guy has a gun (weapon) and you do not, he has an advantage. Aikido, however, is not trained properly and lacks every kind of realism. It takes many years to subconsciously accept the principles behind the techniques and a lot of dedication. And most important thing, basic boxing/kick boxing techniques should be learned at any dojo. How can you learn a defense against a strike if you do not have an experience of being knocked down?Is that why people go Systema/Krav Maga/...

Then don't watch it. Do you have any vids like this? So sick of people and their negative comments. And the whole gay thing, that stopped being cool right around the same time as Chuck Norris' beard, nobody says that anymore. Grow up its you tube!

@naughtiusmaximus222 I used to train with both of the chaps in the video, and now train MMA. I'd just like to point out that everyone who trains Aikido knife defence knows that its not exactly "Realistic", these guys are under no delusions of their real world knife taking skills. Simon my old aikido instructor would do a demo like this with me or or one of the other higher grades and then afterwards go "and now for what a real knife attack is like" and chase me around the dojo while I ran. Dale
Not impressive at all. It's just another choreographed gaykido "demonstration". This one has stupid music too to help dazzle and amaze the credulous audience. None of these gaykido "disarms" will ever work in reality.

You are making yourself look stupid now. Why not read all the other comments first...

LOL! In hindsight I agree. Over the years there have been the odd accident where I've ended up "leaking"... normally during very hot days when sweaty hands make handling the knife a bit slippery. this demo was back in the late 90's and we were put on the spot a bit and just used the first decent-sized knife we could find - from the kitchen at the store cafe!!

its a real knife?

Yes. Actually , on the day of the demostration we were a long way from the dojo so the knife used is actually a chefs knife borrowed from the Restaurant next door.

Correct. However I'd be very interested to see your prison-based knife/shank fighting knowledge demonstrated on video. Feel free to post the link here.
