Wired editor and author Chris Anderson explains Microsoft's rather progressive stance on pirating. Microsoft takes a long view on young companies (and developing countries) who pirate its software, gambling that early exposure will lead to future business and increased profits for the software giant.

-----

Apparently there is such a thing as a free lunch. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails capitalized on offering their music for free, Google lets us search, e-mail and use all kinds of free applications, and ATT will give you a cell phone gratis, if you just buy their monthly plan. These are only a fraction of the businesses that have helped to establish a full-fledged economy based on the concept of zero dollars down.

Wired's Chris Anderson explains the recent phenomenon of making lots of money by charging nothing. Is everything moving toward "free now, pay later"? What are the consequences? - Commonwealth Club of California

Chris Anderson is editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, which has won a National Magazine Award under his tenure. He coined the phrase "The Long Tail" in an acclaimed Wired article, which he expanded upon in the book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More (2006). He currently lives in Berkeley, California with his wife and four young children. Before joining Wired in 2001, he worked at The Economist, where he launched their coverage of the Internet. He also has a degree in physics from George Washington University and did research at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has also worked at the prestigious journals Nature and Science.

  • Microsoft learned it from the drug pushers(or the tobacco companies) on the street.

They give the free sample then have them come back for more. Before they know it, they'll need a daily fix and can't live without it.

  • the business model is simply genius.great strategy

  • @cdubmeyer Awwww... looks like I hit a nerve. Go back to your mother's house and crawl in her womb. That's the best place for you right now little boy.

  • sixth of all, I'm not going to waste anymore time writing limited words on stupid ass youtuube explaining to you and teaching more than you know. I have sold hundreds of torrents to people for years for now, and I know more than you little one, so go back to your room and study more or I will embarass you with your lack of knowledge of torrents. lol, didnt even know that a replacement dll file is a cracked file and that's where this ends, your messages will be not be read and instantly deleted

  • fourth of all, you dont need to use a cracked serial key lol, if you edit that host file and use any key that anyone has ever used regardles of its status adobe's program will take it..its not till you open it up and it then connects with adobe's servers that the key is recognized as one that's been used before...that's where the host file comes in handy. Fifth of all, a modification of the dll file is a crack idiot, Cracks do not serverly slow systems, I have tons of them installed

  • @peanutchopper I can beat this easily there bud lol, first of all I didnt say it was easier, it has nothing to do with being easier, it works longer because an update later on my be able to notice that crack, second of all editing a host file is not hard lol, editing one ip address in it so it bounces right back to your ip is not hard, especially when all you have to do is just open up the edited host file in notepad and save it lol. Third of all, its not a cracked serial key im talking about.

  • @cdubmeyer I'm sorry to disappoint, but a modification of a dll file is much easier than altering the host file and using a "cracked" serial key. Almost all cracks severely slow your system and are never guaranteed to work. The dll file change we utilize is guaranteed a lifetime, on any system, for ANY Adobe product. Beat that bud.

  • @peanutchopper and by the way, its better to use a legit serial key and change the host file for Adobe products and so your ip will ping then use a serial fix or a crack. cracks dont last forever and plus its just better using the host file edit. You learn something new everyday son, learn live it and do it.

  • @peanutchopper lol, that was quick response their little one, sorry I got to you son. Young retards like yourself who think they know everything never make it...grow a personality and try putting peanut butter on your nuts and see what happens, maybe that will calm you down

  • @cdubmeyer First, let me make myself very clear, I am not your "son." Secondly, I doubt you could navigate yourself out of a cardboard box, let alone establish a successful business. This conversation is over, as I have already trumped every single theory you've thrown my way. Good day.

  • @peanutchopper lol, i have a diploma in high school and have an associates in business and I am self employed, I have a computer repair business and also a power washing business I have ran since I was 18 there buddy. How about do us all a favor and quit thinking every thing is a damn conspiracy and try living in the real world son.

  • @cdubmeyer To be honest, I haven't understood a single post you've created as of yet. Apparently, you don't have the knowledge, nor intelligence to have a civil conversation. Do us all a favor and get a high school diploma and college degree, Ok? Good day.
