After Adverse Publicity, Wal-Mart Drops $400,000 Healthcare Claim Against Former Employee Disabled in Traffic Accident
After tremendous adverse publicity, retail giant Wal-Mart has announced it is dropping its effort to collect over $400,000 in healthcare reimbursement from Debbie Shank, a former employee. Debbie lost much of her memory and ability to communicate or walk in a car crash in May 2000. Her family successfully sued the trucking company involved, and after attorneys' fees and expenses, the $417,000 from the settlement was put in a trust for Debbie's care. That's when Wal-Mart stepped in and sued the Shanks to recover the medical costs. Wal-Mart won the case in court. The story generated a public outcry after it was recently featured on several national news networks and newspaper editorials. We speak with Debbie's husband, Jim Shank. [includes rush transcript]

@finkster Ok you can't think for youself. No one can be that stupid. Its not that she works at walmart its that she is mentally disabled. where are you getting this different outlook stuff from?. Jumped from limited to fallout why? Useless = mentally retarded you arnt getting better. other paragraph is just retoric. you need to learn to argue or at least respond to a point. All im saying is that mentally retarded people shouldnt get helped thats it. nothing you write relates to it. yesimispell

@h3ll0xzx555 I could go further about how fucked up and stupid all your comments and your logic are, but at this point I kinda feel bad about insulting a developmentally disabled person. I just really think your caretakers should regulate how much you use the internet, and teach you social skills and how to be less of a prick so that you might be able to go out and get a job some day.

@h3ll0xzx555 And as far as "understanding the real world" goes...this isn't Fallout. We have enough resources that we don't have to kill our kids because they had the misfortune of getting injured. After that life-ruining accident she was in, any decent human being would agree that she deserves the help she needs. You must be way more wrong in the head than she is if you're so adamantly opposed to injured people being cared for, and thus, you can't really decide who's "useless."

@h3ll0xzx555 LOL, all your arguments are based on baseless pre-judgments on people you don't know. Different outlook = failure at life (we live on a planet full of failures then). Person works at walmart = useless human being who deserves to die. You're too ignorant to realize that almost every productive member of society here has had a crappy dead-end job at one point in their early lives. Are they all useless then? I guarantee that when you get your first job it will be something similar.

@finkster Look I know it is hard for people like you to understand the real world but get this theres limited resources. So why spend money on mentally retarded people when the same resources could be spent saving more useful people? Stop avoiding my argument.

@finkster Not every one I disagree with. You jumped to a conclusion there and then wrote amazing logic when it was you who was been logically retarded. Simple spelling errors does not equal failure to communicate /facepalm. Looks like I have a learning disablity? Mispelling a word does not equal learning disablity. I really feel sorry if you believe that. Temper tantrum? im not angry in any way. You are useless and please respond to the point "why spend moneny on the useless instead of others."

@finkster My ad hominem is irony. Im not freaking out you seem to be caring alot more than me. I am smart so I will get far. Theres no job for mispelling insults. I bought this computer and have other friends. I would never stock shevles at Walmart. Yes I can call other people useless and failure because people like you who have no idea at all how the world works and thinks everyone can be happy. Mentally disabled people are useless why bother spending money on them when you could save others?

@h3ll0xzx555
Also, every single comment you've made here is "ad hominem." So much for you crying about that.
You wont get far in life FREAKING OUT every time someone who's different than you speaks up. Otherwise, trying to look smart by throwing out misspelled internet insults will be your only job, and the computer your parents bought you will remain your only friend. Maybe some day you can stock shelves at Walmart. Until then, you can't really call other people "useless" and "failure."
