@kennyxemerson mess with the res filter a bit to to get a little tone back and you can apply this method to strings too which is one of the setting most trons come with.
@tomes55moon its called a mellotron. If you're using garageband or logic, you can take a basic flute setting and put your attack and release all the way up so it sounds like the sound cuts at the end of the sustained note, and then go to effects click on 'Automatic Filter' Then choose the resonance filter preset to give it that tape instrument sound you're looking for.

Also be sure to take the reverb off those flutes. You want a very dry sounding signal.
