In 1869 the US government forced large numbers of Indian children into Boarding Schools where brainwashing techniques were used to try to assimilate them and teach them the ways of western society. A popular term was "Kill the Indian, Save the man". Children were stolen from their family, humiliated, physically and mentally abused. More than 100,000 Indian children were stripped of their language, cultural heritage and identity.

@curatrix2008 You should be thrilled to know that there are Native Americans out there getting educations that probably surpass your own. Right now someone on the rez is sending their kid to an Ivy leauge university and the government is helping pay the tuition. It isn't a handout when their paying us hush money for all the disgusting things that good white christians did to our children in the residential schools.

Indians who attended the residential schools clam it was the treatment they received at the residential schools that traumatised them which resulted in them turning into alcoholics and drug addicts.

Who will today's Indian teenagers and young adults blame for their involvement in crime, drugs and alcohol?

All that accusation about the treatment Indian got at the residential schools are all a pack of lie. Indian are a lazy good for nothing people who like to live off welfare and stealing.

my social studies teacher was talking about this, and I'm think I'm the only native and she was using a lot of detail and I started crying because people kept on looking back at me, but I didn't show that I was crying

Not to ever say that this was ok cause it was terrible but Canada did this to EVERYONE, all Canadian citizens who did not "fit" into proper english culture were taken from their family and assimilated! white, black, brown, or even just poor it didnt matter all citizens had to undergo this, its sad that natives got it the worst, but even my father (caucasian) who is now 60 has vivid memories of being beaten by nuns with a cane for 1) speaking irish and 2) being left handed.

My Uncle is Richard Oakes, he was on Alcatraz, he was there representing a stand for all Native rights and that we also have the ability to make our own lives, educated or not. The U.S. government has it's own interest in mind and at that time the Native American's interest. To forcibly take indigenous children away from their parents for an education that a government thinks would be more beneficial to the child's future this is unheard of these days, what would happen if that happened 2day?

@FlyTheObserver You can't get a real history lesson concerning Indigenous People from western history...Majority of Indigenous Nations were more "Civilized"...Indigenous People had systems of equal People, womens rights, voting structures, governmental democracies that was imitated by western world and fair trading...Indigenous People of the west developed the world's most engineered agriculture and developed many medicinal ingredients, this provided much of today's food supply & medicines.
