I Hear

Somebody clap because the world is changing
Barack, I hear you, I hear you, Barack
With silver sleeves wet and elbow deep in dishwater
Barack, I still hear you, I hear you, Barack

Somebody dance because the world is changing
and someone make music for that someone to dance
Because I've negotiated living for a hundred and six years
to aid in America to elect the right man

Shout it! Please shout it!—these are my (hi)stories too!
because I've slave and I've sought for the
red
white
and truth
and that banner maybe spangled
hoisted high
may it be raised
but
someone needs to take notice now
because the world's about to change.

Applaud us out of this social stupor
because we're all made alike
fifty stars, democratic, republican and five fingers.
Five finger, undecided and thirteen stripes.

But I heard Barack on the radio this morning
taken aback by the wisdom in his voice.
And the sound he made
he spoke of change.

I hear you, Barack.
I hear!

  • You always make me smile deeply, sigh restoratively, cry faithfully or just give me the chills. Bless ya my sweet & creative friend.

    Hugz! C a l v i n

    Ciao bello

  • well Hallelujah! Bless you too!

  • This is what's wrong with America today. All we have is unsubstantiated hope and the expectations of something free. Poetry, song, and dance will never change our country. What we should be looking for is strong leadership and values with emphasis on restoring our family structure.

  • Really? The poem doesn't suggest song and dance will change our country, rather, because a change is already underway, the poem encourages us as a nation to supply our country with support by all creative means, by all physical means. The poem suggests that for anything to actually be heard/understood it first must internalized an accepted. I agree, America's success will come in strong leadership and values with emphasis on restoring the family structure. This poem is applauding exactly that!

  • I guess we just applaud in differant ways.

  • ...just like we live different lives. Yes! I think you got it. As long as we applaud.
