Akita Agility - Kenny the Akita

Kenny is the only male Akita I've ever seen compete in AKC agility. In this video Kenny and his best friend John Hadfield compete in AKC Open Standard and Jumpers With Weaves in Aston PA. Notice in the JWW his back foot clips the last pole of the final triple, and we are both relieved when the pole doesn't fall.

Smart. They are very smart, fast learners. After we adopted an Akita with severe behaviour problems that almost cost her her life and rehabilitated her making her my wonderful companion she is now, i realized that they are really not "dumb" or 'stubborn". They require a different, special approach that is firm, extremely fair and just, respectful and stable, but after you have got it right and became a pack leader to an Akita i can't think of a better dog...i would not want any other dog now.

I must say you have trained you dog very well! I have an Akita bitch, she will be two in a few weeks. I could never get her to jump over any kind of wall or step even something as short as one foot. And the other day I got her to repeatedly to jump over a 3 feet wall and she really seemed to enjoy her self. Akitas are not for everyone but I am so pleased I have one as she naturally guards my family and me, and I have even managed to train her to play fetch!

@xxxluvponiesxxx Sorry - I don't know where Cardiff is. Look online or in the phone book for dog training and ask around. Also - I don't think Akitas would be good for flyball. It's a lot of 'wear and tear' on the hips! Just really work on obedience and getting her used to being around other dogs. They shouldn't really do a lot of jumping until they are a year old (hips). You will know when she is ready to try agility. Good luck!

@flexin007 They are very "independent." They don't need constant attention, and are happy doing their own thing. Like all working dogs, they like to be busy and have jobs to do. You cannot force them to do anything. To train an Akita, you need to think like one, and convince him/her that he/she loves doing whatever task you're teaching. If you haven't spent a lot of time around Akitas, I'd advise you to get a big friendly Rottweiler.

@xxxluvponiesxxx Start early with obedience training at a good school. Akitas are not easy - you need to learn to think like one. They are also very sensitive - be soft and gentle (and consistent). Good luck!
