This great song was written by Hugh Prestwood and pays homage to one of the earth's oldest inhabitants: the bristle cone pine. Although I've been aware of the song for years, it was after hearing a performance by autoharp virtuoso Bryan Bowers that I was inspired to arrange this song for the cello banjo...

  • I've been looking all over for chords to this that sound just right...can't find any! I love your version, I really do.

  • @shoepixie Send me a note requesting the chords and I'll send a chart with my chord choices. Contact me through the "contact" page of my website (Youtube won't allow me to post the url, but you can find it by googling "clawhammer").

  • Also Gm this is "Sawmill tuning right"?

  • @CrowBanjo37 For the last year or so, I've been putting up the new website and working on getting the "progressive clawhammer" section up and running. Promoting those artists who are pushing the limits of clawhammer technique has taken precedence over my tab page. Now that my "progressive" project is online, I should be able to spend some time putting up more music on my instruction page. I'll put "Bristlecone" on the waiting list.

By the way, Gm tuning is not Sawmill tuning. It is: gDGBbD

  • @CrowBanjo37 Actually it's Gm tuning... Mike

  • Mike I love learning your songs...can this song be transcribed to a normal banjo? What would be the tunings?

  • @CrowBanjo37 Yes, it can be played on a regular five string. The cello banjo uses standard tunings, it's just tuned an octave lower (or close to an octave depending on if it's in G or A). I often play this on my vega in Gm tuning. I capo up two frets, but of course you would capo to whatever fret best suits your voice... Mike
