6500 TON Rubber Pad Press

The control system was modified in 2001 as part of a lean event to automate cycling of the parts and to eliminate the need for the operator to climb into the press area to place parts. It was set up to run on a Allen Bradley Micrologix 1200 PLC to shuttle the parts in/out and cycle the press hydraulic valves. They made use of existing motor starters, limit/pressure switches, etc as a goal of the project, to keep costs down. The electrical print and parts list is available. The valves were set up in the PLC to "rapid" down close to the table before it entered slower "press" speed. The press would then close down over the parts until ram pressure reached a set point on a digital display. The valves were then cycled to raise the press and the parts were shuttled out. Speed crossover point was controlled by a limit switch, actuated by a chain drive, on the side of the machine.

The press ran for a while with the modifications but they were removed when the press was shut down. The press was never changed back electrically and never ran again.
