If you have tack strip you need pad.this video does not tell you anything but wich way to point the tack strip. you also need strip on the sides its a wall. Installer of 25 years.

Tackless isnt necesarry on wood stairs, crease it good with a chisle ans staple.
BTW you cant do good finish work with gloves Mary, it's all feel a calus wont kill you...
