This is the steel box with lead lined panels that I use to store my items.
Contains mostly Radium luminous watch parts in sealed jars plus aircraft gauges, mineral samples and vacuum tubes.
All legal and exempt items for private premises.
The gamma radiation from this store is low level. A much greater concern to me is any Radon gas that may escape from the containers. Radon, being an inert noble gas can be very difficult to contain. I use an active carbon electrostatic forced air filtration system to capture most Po, Pb and Bi atoms. Forced air ventilation to outside would be a better solution. I live in a low Radon area and although I don't have a Rn detector my experiments have shown only slightly elevated gamma levels from tv screen dust compared to other rooms in the property !!!

  • who the hell has radium in their home? What are you doing with it? a bomb? how long have you been using this stuff and what about your health?

  • @QwAdr0x256 Its called a hobby, and my health is great, thanks for asking.

  • OMFG dude you just got yourself irradiated! Are you an idiot? At leas buy a radiation suit for fuck sake!

  • @Kisskatalin1

    lol

  • Awesome, but does a metal box make a good protection? The radiactivity is too high to store such items at home, I guess.

  • @TheAccendant The metal box has little effect of shielding the radiation. I used it as its very durable and offers a lot of protection if I need to move it. I believe I could throw it down my stairs and all the contents would be protected and none of the containers break open. Not going to try that though, lol.

  • great storage case! btw is that a lead lining on the inside? ifso, it's better on the outside so any betas will be absorbed by the wood before hitting the lead, wich can cause more gamma radiation.

Can you give me some more info on the filter you use? I'm also in need of such a filter or indeed a forced air ventilator to the outside ( but you still have to make sure it doesn't come right back in via a window i guess )

  • @ALARAiswise i bet binladen sayd the same fing after blowing the towers " you know its called a hobby"

    i wouldn't want a naibor like you :D

by the how did you end up with this hobby?

just bouth a gaiger meter.... hm boring 0.1 hmmm. ou hell il buy some radium so i could meter it :DDD

  • how do you buy that F__k Nuke

  • The sheer amount of uninformed knee-jerk and just plain stupid responses here are appalling. Heavens forbid these people find out that bananas are radioactive, or that their yearly medical exams give them much higher doses than your collection would.

Someone is far more likely to develop cancer from smoking than you are from your collection, yet everyone acts like you're collecting nuclear warheads.

Aside from all that, very excellent collection!

  • @urmo345 Nope nano sieverts is lowest

  • @cassiavc microsieverts in hour, lowest measurement unit.

  • @QwAdr0x256 those are microsieverts and it is low count and it is over 100 only when very close.

  • Before You Panic! - This unit mesures in Micro Sieverts / hour. This reading is about 800 times normal. It takes about 10,000 times to be hazardous to your health (cancer increase). At 10,000,000 times to be Dangerous (Fatal). It would be best to not expose your self to that rate very long. Don't ingest it either!!!!!

  • why why why, a hobby, it's like playing Russian roulette as a hobby !
