Arkansas River Race 1949. This was the first race on that river. All types of boats were allowed. The night before the race there was a lot of rain so the level was much higher than during the training. Röbi Ris from the "Mittelländer Kanu Club, Switzerland" won the race, as he was the only one to reach the measuring mark.
I moved to Colorado in 1954 when I was 5 years old. My parents were determined to see and do everything in that beautiful state. I remember taking that train to see the Salida kayak race a couple of times. The train would just stop and everyone would get out and sit on the rocks beside the Arkansas to watch. Love the pictures of the Collegiate Peaks. Great video! Great memories!

That low bridge seems to have been a quite dangerous spot. However, spectators were more concerned with the boat than with the paddlers. Great video.
