Im guessing 99-00? Bad VANOS years.. Try using an oil system cleaner than a little thicker oil. I promise it will quiet it. Had the same issue on my E39.

Yes, mine is a '99. It has been fixed by Mr Vanos (I've embedded a link to my new video). You commented on my other video about using 0w-40 oil.. this car uses 10w-60 Castrol TWS, as recommended by BMW. I do not know what was put in by the previous owner (probably any old crap, as I get the impression the car wasn't very well looked after by the previous owner!), but one of the first things I did when I bought this car was do an oil swap for Castrol 10w-60.

@BriC175 - Oh shoot I totally forgot it was an M5 for a second. I was looking for 540i vanos. Yeah forgot it uses that kind of oil

That´s far from unusual! It has no influence on the engine performance. It just dosn´t sound as you would expect. Close the hood and you can´t hear it unless you know the rattle is there.
