@1401JSC But the ear doesn't hear this as a tone cluster. The C# E# and A form a triad in F# minor. The B is simply a dissonant "suspension" held over from the previous measure where is was part of a G# B D# chord.. The B resolves to an A in an F# minor chord in the 2nd half of the measure.
This is a motet style fugue in the stile antico.
Palestrina introduced and resolved dissonances in exactly this manner.
Does anyone know what instrument KG is playing and the year of the recording?
In fugues, the writing is a combination of horizontal lines rather than vertical harmonic thinking.
Look at the beginning of bar 17. The 4 voices lead to a simultaneous A B C# E#.
the important thing is that intervallic disonnances are resolved.
