Furtwangler was a gentleman. My mother was a soprano, who worked with him in the early 1930s, in Germany.

She told me "No way was my professor a Nazi!"...

My mom was Jewish. She loved to sing Wagner...

Just because Richard Wagner was a bit crazy... We can still enjoy his wonderful music.

My mother stayed in touch with Furwangler until his death. She had the utmost respect, for him as a human being, and as a wonderful musician.

What surprises me here is that you are having a discussion on whether or not Furtwängler was a NAZI. There was already a trial to decide that, and he was found innocent. He saved lives, as did Schindler, by employing Jews. What would you do, if you were a conductor under harsh circumstances.

This film shows that German culture is the property of the workers just as much as any other German. Making sure that the workers are initiated in the culture of their folk is an obvious way to prevent the development of a cultureless and nationless proletariat. That's it, that's all.

During Furtwängler's denazification trial, the judge started the trial with the following sentences:

"The investigations showed that Furtwängler had not been a member of any [Nazi] organization, that he tried to help people persecuted because of their race, and that he also avoided … formalities such as giving the Hitler salute."

In April 1944, Goebbels wrote: "Furtwängler has never been a National Socialist. Nor has he ever made any bones about it. Which Jews and emigrants thought was sufficient to consider him as one of them, a key representative of so-called 'inner emigration'. Furtwängler['s] stance towards us has not changed in the least"
