PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Coast Guard rescued nine people today from three sailboats off the coast of North Carolina.

A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew based out of Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., landed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point with the latest survivors, who were plucked from their sailboat about 120 miles off shore.

This was Air Station Elizabeth City's third rescue today.

A rescue helicopter crew hoisted three people from the sailboat Seaker at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Diamond Shoals, N.C. The air crew transported the rescued to Air Station Elizabeth City where they were evaluated by medical crews and released.

In addition to the Seaker rescue, three people were rescued from a makeshift life raft about 160 nautical miles east of Cape Hatteras in 34-foot seas. They were aboard the sailboat Lou Pantai when rough seas and heavy winds forced the three sailors to abandon ship. A Coast Guard helicopter crew transported the rescued to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. The sailors are suffering from hypothermia.

  • I hate to burst your bubble, but the USCG has participated in combat roles in every war the U.S. has ever been in.

Beyond that, it also does things that would make folks like you prefer to get shot at, in comparison.

  • CG personnel are over there little Joeey. BTW, what have you done this week to serve your country?

  • cant they get killed by a shark i wish this was my job but im scared that a shark will eat me

  • @JayM0001 hell if it werent for the coat guard a lot of lives wuld be lost..even tho im in the army i have respect fr the CG

  • for a week to get one headshot doesn't sound too fun to me either. Just respect each other. Have pride in your branch, but don't put down the other guy in a different uniform next to you, without him you would be the USA!

  • @Joeey As I am sure you have realized by now, they are in Iraq, but you also have to take into consideration that their mission is more focused on life saving but respond when they are required to use force. So if we sent them all over seas who would rescue boaters in distress and provide what little security we have in our ports?

  • @ramseyboater Actually the Coast Guard was doing both offshore patrols in Cutters and inland/river patrols during the war.

  • the USCG has been in iraq.

  • USCG is also the oldest service, they use to be called the Cutter service.

  • You are wrong let me teach you somethng real quick, COAST GUARD IN VIETNAM: Five white 311-foot cutters of the recently established Coast Guard Squadron Three assigned to "Market Time" coastal surveillance in South Vietnam. The cutters that were over there were the USCGC HALF MOON, USCGC YAKUTAT, USCGC GRESHAM, USCGC BARATARIA, and USCGC BERING STRAIT."

  • because the dolphin's came before the jayhawks, and they are designed for shorter distance rescues.

  • guard " BOBO"
