Tsunami damage in Crescent City harbor on March 11. At about 7:30 AM on March 11, a Tsunami generated during the 8.9 quake off Japan arrived in Crescent City Harbor. CC Harbor has a history of getting the worst out of any Tsunami. What is nasty elsewhere is downright catastrophic in our Harbor. The 2006 tsunami here led to apx $20M in repair bills. This one may be a bit more. This was shot from a helicopter with a Panasonic HPX170 on a shoulder mount. Editing was minimal and the lower thirds done in Motion.

  • Did a majority of the boats get out of the harbor and out to sea before the tsunami came ashore?

  • @lukebccb

I heard that most of them did get out, but obviously, some did not. I saw a number of boats waiting offshore when I was up in the helicopter. I understand that most are now based in Humboldt Bay to the South, at least until we can get our harbor repaired. Thanks for your concern. By the way, my warm thanks to Cal-Ore Life-Flight, who supplied the helicopter services that made this footage possible.

  • @lukebccb Well, they were supposed to. But a lot of the owners of the boats didn't do anything and their boats were wrecked and added to the destruction of the harbor.

  • I just don't know what to say. : (

  • We watched you flying up there, and wished we could see what you were seeing. Thanks for posting. I think this is the best overview of the damage in the boat basin.

  • WOW.. Such devastation . I know it dose not compare to the damage in Japan ,but it will be in the millions and affect people livelihoods. The wife and I go to C.C 2 or 3 times a year.

  • The harbor is such a big part of many people's lives. This is sad.

  • Seriously, no comments? That was one of the ballsiest things I have ever seen. Awesome!
