Mahjong is a extremely popular game in Asia. Some years ago, about 1998, mahjong was redone with chinese international rules to separate mahjong from the mafia groups. In spite of common people played it in Asia for a long time. Something like that in Japan, where exists old mangas about mahjong. Then, at the start of the new century, started too the International tournaments where players from all continents played mainly with the chinese rules.

But there are too japanese mahjong tournaments with players from all over the world. That´s why now everybody is promoting the different variants of mahjong ruleset and doing tournaments. But it seems that chinese and japanese ruleset are imposing, mainly the chinese... Japanese mahjongh was promoted too in scondary/high schools in Japan, as you can see. With this promotion of mahjong, other asian games were promoted too, in different degrees.
