Of all the modern day batsmen, Brian Lara is the greatest. That is not an insult to players like Tendulkar or Ponting, that's just fact.

Guys arguing are missing the whole point, it is not who is the best batsmen but who is ur favorite batsmen. Fastest bowler Sachin faced until coming to International cricket is Raju Kulkarni (who's fastest ball was 133 kph ;)) To build dominance over fast bowler is hard with that kind of background. Lara hardly faced any quality spinners in his days but dominated Murali & Warne. These two players are way beyond training and coaching manual and have a gift. Happy I had a chance to watch both.

The fact that Tendulkar has not scored a 250 in his 180+ test matches is enough for me to say Lara is better than Tendulkar in the Test format. When you are talking about overall or just ODI's, Tendulkar is the more complete batsman. He can't stay in long innings however and in the ODI format he is pretty selfish

@vishyvikranth Tendulkar plays more for records, Lara is much better under pressure Lara has the highest ever score most double hundreds, Lara scored big scores agaist australia when they were at their best. Lara scored the 501* first class 400 Tests 8 100s in a row in country cricket. I live in Australia sorry but Lara destroyed us many times and i dont remember tendulkar doing anything he got a couple of hundreds but lara won matches all by himself agaisnt us.

@vishyvikranth Lara is much better in my books he played in a era when West indies was very weak team. He destroyed Australia many times. he batted with the tail most the time and very aggressive and does massive scores. his record is very good only difference is tendulkar . Lara record is much better agaisnt australia and other better teams tendulkar records are good agaisnt zimbarawe and those countries. Lara could bat much longer innings.

@MultiSazam It's ludicrous you're comparing his recent form with that of his career.I followed both of them since 90s and in india people used to switch off their TV sets when sachin gets out..his importance was of that degree...so,he played good part of his career (11 years)without any support whatsoever from the team...He was way above lara when it comes to consistency...

Indian team in 90s used to rank between 6th and 8th.WI was in top 3 till 1999.They had far better bowling attack and relatively better batting as well in 90s.Sachin till 2000 averaged 58+ and he along with waugh and john wright were the only ones who averaged above 50 in tests in 90s.So,lara was no where near sachin in 90s except for some great blistering innings here and there.I guess you started watching cricket post 2001.Sachin was india's only hope throughout 90s...

@majesticmaniac Absolutely agree with your comment mate. Brian Lara on his day was the most exciting and dominating batsman of his era, its a pity he didn't get to handover the baton to an upcoming Caribbean talent, kinda like how Viv handed it to him.

@n1ck822 Even the great Don and Richie Benaud were huge admirers of Sachin and R Benaud himself rated Sachin as the best batsman of the modern era and second only to Don. I'm a huge fan of Brian Lara's style of play but, he was inconsistent when compared to Sachin. In fact Lara himself said he would like to be as consistent as Sachin. Tendulkar didnt establish so many records due to luck, in your anxiety to rate your fav batsman as the GOAT do not ignore the facts people.

@Rorski1 not even close ? just dont post shit again on utube dude.....lara was a great batsman, an exciting talent, but so was sachin. Lara to me was the most exciting test batsman while Sachin the most exciting one day batsman. Why else world Lara himself rate Sachin as the GOAT ? Lara was an like artist while Sachin is like a scientist...both geniuses. I'm afraid your judgement is very flawed and biased, and its ironical considering Indian fans are usually accused of being biased.
Ofcourse Lara is Dravids fav...I know so because I have played all my life with the same defensive technique (well not quite) as Dravid, scoring runs slowly but surely in local cricket matches that I play...and I wish I was born with the flare of a Lara or a Sehwag...They are just soo darn entertaining....Tendulkar is a greater batsman than either, no doubt, but on his day, non excites better than lara...Tendulkar is a mathetician, Lara is an artist...
