You need a true horizon to see these phenomenon. Green flashes are caused by the reds being scattered more effectively out of out light path then the greens due to atmospheric inversions and allowing the green through to our eyes, but only for an instant before the Sun disappears lower below the horizon.

You are watching the formation basically in real time. The -35c temperature allowed for greater dispersion and separation of the reds from the greens.
