Its a bitter cold day in 1978, and John Durant an I are trackside with a old Kodak Super 8mm sound movie camera. We are just north of the Bear Mountain bridge on the east shore of the Hudson River on the old NYC Water Level Route in New York. The first train has FL9's north bound in push pull fashion. He is seen blowing the Handcock Air whistle as he passes. Then n/b Amtrak #63, the Niagara Rainbow passes with fantastic echoing horns in the river valley. Then a s/b Amtrak turbo blast past with even better sounding horns. Sorry for the quality, and shakey old film. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294™...

  • Hmm that F40 must be headed to Croton Harmon to be exchanged for a FL-9

  • @TEMPLE7D The F40 is heading north, so its out of Croton Harmon at this point. Thanks for watching...

  • Were those air whistles common?

  • @mbta1000 New Haven used them a good bit on many locomotives, Conrail used them for a while on there executive E-8's, which I have posted a while back. Other than that! I don't think to many rairoads used them. Thanks for watching...

  • Just too cool… No need to apologize about film quality or shakiness. Just glad these videos still exist.

  • great time travel!

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO! i love vintage footage. nice catch of the fl-9's in the penn central scheme

  • How unusual in that the Turboliner has a Nathan P-01235 horn, which were customized by Nathan for Amtrak's E60 electric locomotives. Pretty unique and cool sound.

  • Bitter days for Northeastern railroads. That first train is criminally too short. Great shot of a Turbo; I regret missing them when I was growing up in that area.

  • Man, quite good considering it's old Super 8 film. Priceless footage, thanks for sharing!

  • Outstanding!!!
